Bang for your buck? How bout BOOM for your buck!, September 6, 2011
    By

Okay…so, in today’s day and age, you can roll over to Walmart, Target, Best Buy, etc. and drop $20 on a pair of earbuds easily. I mean, there are $20+ earphones everywhere these days. HOWEVER, ever stop to think that maybe not all $20 earphones are the same? Here’s the deal. I am what is called an “audiophile”. I am practically addicted to hi-fidelity listening (either in music, gaming, television/movies, etc.) This means, I’ve tried everything from fancy in-ear monitors (multiple hundreds of dollars each), to the cheap black plastic earbuds you get on an airplane (haha). Let me just say that this is quite easily the best boom you will get for your buck. $20? Seriously? The sound in these compared to other $20 buds is not even close! Obviously, I’m not gonna stand here and say that the $20 UE100s are better earphones than, say, some $200 earbuds of another company…however, when looking for a great set of all-purpose, regular day-to-day earphones, you can’t beat these at this price. You can’t even come close. Long live Ultimate Ears!

I found these to be pretty good sound quality for the low price. If you are giving any attention to the “Ultimate Ears” brand, however, be sure you understand the HUGE differences between these and what musicians use. (The packaging refers very prominently to Ultimate Ears being the choice for professional musicians.) The professional version of Ultimate Ears are CUSTOM fit (literally a mold is taken of each ear) … AND there are 3 independent speakers in each ear piece. So, both the noise cancellation and sound quality for the professional version is just a totally different league of product. These are still great for the money. Just be sure you don’t get fooled into thinking you’re getting anything near what the pros use.

Receiving this product in the mail, it was with a small degree of suspicion that I opened the earphones and tried them out. But my reticence quickly became joy as I experienced a magnificent sound. Truly great aural experience and one I will replicate many times over. These outstanding earphones come in a choice of five different colors and the package includes different sizes of bulbs to allow for differing ear shapes and canal sizes.

The earphones sit quite comfortably in the ear without that odd feeling of being about to fall out. The soft feeling of the bulb makes for ease of fit without any kind of edgy awkwardness often found in other products. The pleasant feeling is light, padded, small, and ideally suited for the ear. The attached cords are easy to manipulate and somehow feel less intrusive than most wires. They are light, colorful and fit an iPhone easily.

It is the sound, though, that makes this product a standout. Beautiful, warm tone that sounds both distant and close at the same time, similar to a live concert. The distance in the sound allows for eardrum protection while the closeness blocks out most outside noise. The amazing balance within the little speaker of bass, midrange, and treble is full without being painful in any sense. Although lacking in the richness of a desktop speaker system, these little earphones are the next best thing.

Opening the package was easy and involved a sliding of the thumb along the side. Once it was opened, there was an excessive amount of papers and instructions to set aside. I wish the company could combine some of this information into one paper rather than having to throw several things away. The little alternate bulbs are light and bouncy and can easily fly out of the package and roll away if the purchaser is not careful.

Highly recommended for music enthusiasts, this product is one of the finest of its kind on the market.

While I don’t use earphones often, when I do, I’m pretty picky. After all, these are MY ears, and I really don’t want any problems with them. So I gave this particular set of earphones a solid “going-over” to see if I would be comfortable with them.

Test #1 – The comfort test. With several sets of soft plastic ear buds designed to fit every ear, these passed wonderfully. They felt nice in my ears, and didn’t bother me (hurt) like some do after only a few minutes.

Test #2 – These are supposed to block a significant amount of outside sound. Without plugging them into music, I tried them while riding in the car, while listening to a radio, and while simply sitting at home with background. I estimate that they removed a significant percent (60-70%) of the background noise I was experiencing.

Test #3 – Quality of sound. Wow. And double Wow. My split tracks were genuinely split, my stereo came in clearly, and I could clearly hear the difference between digital downloads (clear) and older CDs (not so clear). I played a full range of music (kids to symphonic orchestra) and was truly amazed at the quality of the sound.

Test #4 – Sturdiness. How many times have you bought a new pair of headphones only to have the wires break easily or pull out of the earphones? While I didn’t YANK on the wires, I did give each earpiece a sturdy tug, and they held up well. The wires in the earphones are soft (bendable without breaking) and thicker than the “cheap” variety and appear to be the kind that will hold up over time.

I have slipped this pair in with my Ipod for long trips, tuning out the background noise and turning on some of my “relaxation” music … in fact, they are even comfortable enough to wear to bed.

OH, a new idea – with the combination of the noise blocking effect and the music, I wonder if I can sleep through my husband’s snoring? Now THAT would be a real test … above and beyond the call of duty of any earphone. :-)

Great comfort and noise isolation; OK audio. Great Value., November 27, 2010

I spend much of my day at home with earphones in. Generally I have 3 goals with my headphones:
    1. They must be comfortable for extended use (8+ hours)
    2. They must be able to isolate me from outside noise even without the music being really loud (I generally use them while studying and reading either at home or at Starbucks, listening to music to keep me from being distracted)
    3. They should have good sound (I generally listen to instrumental where there are no vocals to distract from bad sound).

Ultimate Ears 100 gets 5 stars on #1 & #2, but 3 stars on the sound quality. I think that the sound is about equivalent to what I hear with Apple earbuds. And when the music makes heavy use of bass, the sound is poor. It does much better at mid and high ranges.

But it is a very inexpensive headset and the noise-isolation and comfort are among the best I’ve had. So I strongly recommend these if you are looking for inexpensive earbuds primarily for comfort and sound isolation. I cannot recommend them if you are an audiophile who needs high-quality sound in all ranges.

If you are able to spend more money, I recommend Pioneer SE-CLX50-JH Deep Bass Noise Isolating Earbud Headphones. But if you want sound that is comparable to the iPhone earbuds with added comfort and noise isolation, Ultimate Ears 100 is the best choice I know of.

Surprisingly good bargain earbuds, June 9, 2011

Throw away your those packed-in earbuds. For less than $20, you can purchase high quality earbuds that will isolate, look sharp, and deliver very good sound for the price.

    Build Quality:
As I unpacked the the UE-100s, I could immediately identify the physical strengths of the headset. The cable feels substantial and pliable, though thankfully, it is not prone to tangling in your pocket or gym bag. I have experience with offerings from Sennheiser, Skull Candy, and J-Buds in this price rance, and I have yet to encounter a product that feels as sturdy as the UE-100. The 3.5mm jack is a right-angle plug, which puts less strain on your devices. The attention to detail continues, with a slider that allows you to synch the buds up in your bad to avoid tangling, or to synch the cable under your chin so that it is stabilized when you’re moving around.

    Fit:
Ultimate Ears included a variety of conveniently matching silicone gel tips for the buds, so chances are good that most will be able to find a proper fit. Once in the ear, the buds themselves are comfortable. They were designed on an angle to drop the cables directly down the natural break in the ear lobe. Not only does this prevent movement when the cable is jostled, but there is almost no fatigue from wearing the buds for an extended period. Most importantly, the seal created by the silicone gel tips is surprisingly strong. I did not expect to have total isolation from these buds, but they did a fantastic job passively isolating outside sound. This not only helps cut out distractions, but you can run your output device at a lower volume thus saving your ears over the long run.

    Sound:
Build quality and fit are nice, but sound is the reason why you’re probably reading a review for the UE-100. I have owned a variety of earbuds, IEMs, and over-the-ear headphones. I love my Triple.Fi 10s and make no mistake, the UE-100 does not put out sound of that quality, but everything is relative. These buds cost under $20, and that said, I have NEVER heard an earbud this good in this price range. The buds perform best in the mid-range, but they definitely are no slouch for sound quality on the spectrum extremes. Highs are accurate, but not clinical. Lows boom enough to keep you interested in the music. In a word: the UE-100s sound fun. I generally listen to R&B, jazz and some select rap. This bass driven music is well reproduced with the UE-100s due to the good bass response.

    Conclusion:
The UE-100 personifies a great “gym” headphone. The cost is low. You get a 2-year warranty in case the sweat breaks down the buds over time. Finally, you get a “fun” sounding earbud that isolate enough to drown out your surroundings while allowing you to listen to your music at a safe level. What’s there to lose?
